Beverly Nelson
How did a Massachusetts
girl get to Nucla? By teaching
in Germany, of course!
Beverly Nelson, who has
been teaching Kindergarten
at Nucla Elementary School
since 1987, lived in Mas-
sachusetts the first ten years
of her life. Then her family
moved to Schenectady, New
York. where she graduated
high school. She earned a
Bachelor's degree in Music at
Baldwin-Wallace College
outside Cleveland, Ohio, and
taught elementary music for
six years in the Schenectady
area. During that time she
earned her Master's in music
education at Ithaca College.
Bey decided to try some-
thing a little different and
went to Germany for the'
Department of Defense to
teach there for two years.
While in German), she met
West End, Norwood Teachers of the Week,t,
I John who was a dentist in
the US Army. They married
after returning to the States
and moved to Norwood in
1971.
She did quite a bit of sub-
stitute teaching at Norwood
"when they learned I was a
certified teacher", and Bever-
ly also had quite a few piano
students, both in Norwood
and in Nucla after she and
John moved there in June
1976.
About a month after they
made the move to Nucla their
first child, Kylie, was born.
Then came Tyler, and Beverly
was busy being Morn and
wife. She did a lot of volun-
teer work at Nucla Elemen-
tary and a little bit of
subbing, but she preferred
staying home with her grow-
ing family.
After both kids were in
school full time she decided
to go back to teaching part
time and, since she had al-
ways kept her certification
current, Beverly started
teaching half-days in the
Kindergarten classroom.
Why did she go into teach-
Ing? "I always liked music,
but I didn't want to a profes-
sional musician." she said,
so she decided to combine
the joys of music with teach-
Ingyoung children and found
she really liked it. "l really
enjoy Kindergarten," Bey
says. "You can get to know
the kids better and be more a
part of their lives."
Seeing the big changes in
five-year-old students is also
a pleasure she enjoys. "They
change so much at that age.
and the amount they learn in
a year is phenomenal! And
then there are the hugs."
Outside the classroom
Beverly Nelson enjoys play-
ing the piano, although she
doesn't have nearly as much
time to do that as she would
like. And she enjoys sewing,
counted cross stitch, and
being a wife and mother.
Inside the classroom she
shares this year with Vlcky
Gather, who has the morning
Kindergarten class. Beverly
enjoys the give and take with
the young children, seeing
their eager little faces light up
with new discoveries every
day, and hearing joyful little
voices answering questions
or singing new songs. And. of
course, the hugs.
Sheri Carr is the K- 12 Spe-
cial Education Teacher at the
Norwood School. As a special
education teacher Sheri Is
able to devote the time and
help students achieve the
learning and the special
skills that maybe they can
not get in regular classroom
study. With the smaller clas-
ses and with the help of a
substitute teacher, they are
better able to apply the
Sher/Cart
teaching on a one to one
basis. At present time Sheri
has twenty students in her
class, the needs of the stu-
dents vary from year to year.
and so the individual teach-
ing has to vary with the
needs.
Sheri has been teaching
K-12 Special Education at
the Norwood school for the
last eight years. Before com-
ing to Norwood she worked
part time as a substitute
teacher, and couch for the
volleyball, basketball, and
track team at the school in
Gunnison Colorado, Sheri
grew up in Gunnlson and
graduated from hlgh school
there. Sheri said, "One of the
reasons I like Norwood Is, it's
close to home and I can visit
quite often".
The first part of Sheri's
education came from Karney
State University in Nebraska,
but she returned to Western
State in Gunnlson to obtain
both her Bachelors and
Masters degree in Special
Education. After graduation
Sheri worked part time with
the Gunnison school until
the former principle at Nor-
wood. Mr. Campbell gave her
a chance to start teaching
with the little experience that
she had at that time.
Sheri is single, belongs to
the Eastern Star, and is a
certified volleyball official.
Athletics, and music a part of
her free time hobbies. Fixing
up her house and home
repairs has also become one
of the bigger hobbies Sherl
has. When time permits she
does play in the brass band.
Sheri's greatest enjoyment is
working and learning from
the kids in her class, watch-
ing them grow. develope, and
achieve skills they didn't
know they possessed.
Why did Sheri become a
teacher? She has always's
found it rewarding and en-
joyable working with people
and especially kids. She finds
it very exciting knowing that
you have had a positive in-
fluence on there lives. She is
also thankful for the oppor-
tunity to work with and
develope the relationships
that she has with both the
staff and the kids at the Nor-
wood school.
District Accountability Committee Addressing Goals
The West End Schools Dis-
trict Accountability Commit-
tee met on Monday.
November 14, at the ad-
ministration office. Superin-
tendent Phyllis Harrison
gave a brief report and
passed out copies of "Ac-
countability Connection", a
newsletter for all account-
ability committees through
the Colorado Department of
Education.
Mrs. Harrison also briefed
the committee on Paradox
Elementary School since the
head teacher, Neddie San-
dais. was unable to attend
the meeting. There are six-
teen students at PES in K-3.
as well ms ten in a pre-school
program being held at the
school. The PES account-
ability is putting together a
Christmas play for the com-
munity.
Dr. Wayne Graybeai
reported on Nucla High
School's activities, including
adoption by the building ac-
countability of a new
homebound education policy
and the implementation of
additional procedures to deal
with truancy. A new atten-
dance policy will be worked
on at the January meeting.
He reported that eleven stu-
dents will attend the State
Student Accountability Con-
ference in Colorado Springs
along with three sponsors.
The high school account-
ability committee changed
the December meeting to the
5th at 5:30 p.m. in order to
avoid another two-meeting
evening as occurred in
November.
Dr. Constance Mahaney
reported that the Nucla
Elementary School account-
ability committee is setting in
place a plan for the
playground, for new equip-
ment. landscaping, and so
forth. She also reported there
will be a Santa's Workshop
again this year to help raise
money toward that project.
Mrs. Harrison gave a brief
report for Naturita Middle
School. saying that guest
speakers are being planned
to address students and to
work toward the goal of
building self-esteem.
The school climate commit-
tee is to meet to go through
the information Dr. Mahaney
has available on methods of
assessing building and class-
room climate. They will'make
a report at the December
meeting.
National Education Week
was discussed. Each build-
ing is holding contests to try
to get as many parents in-
volved as possible.
The film "Higher Expecta-
tions - Better Results", which
explains what content stand-
ards and assessments in-
volve, was viewed during the
meeting. The film clearly
defines what standards are
and what the basis Is for
developing content stand-
ards by each school district.
There was discussion
about the possibility of
changing the day and time of
the District Accountability
meetings but the general
consensus is to leave the
meetings on the third Mon-
day at 7:30 p.m. However.
because the school board will
meet on December 15 rather
than on the 20th, next
month's meeting will be held
on the 12th instead.
Riddle Me This...
Even with Thanksgiving
falling in the middle of the
"riddle week", there still were
quite a few who responded to
the question which asked
who Gerald Ford's running
mate was in the 1976
presidential election. The
correct answer is Robert
Dole and the winner is Sam
Galyean.
With basketball seasol
now upon us, The Riddler
asks a "hoops" question.
When you know the answe
call 864-7425. You could b|
the next to win.
Now, riddle me thls....Wha
is the term for a scoring effort
that misses the hoop. net and
backboard?
