Several issues of in-
terest have prompted me
to follow the proposed golf
course development in Na-
turlta and make a gen-
eral response to reactions
and concerns that rye ob-
served. I have family and
friends living in Naturita,
I'm an avid golfer, and
some of my fondest golf
memories occured when 1
was playing with Bill Been.
Bill took up the sport
only a few years before his
untimely passing, but in
that short period became
known in every community
where a golf course existed
in Western Colorado and
Eastern Utah. To have
that powerful feeling of
love and a commitment to
a cause gives us the abil-
ity to overcome obstacles
and achieve tremendous
goals.
From my point of view
in Grand Junction, I see a
small group of people mak-
ing a whole lot of noise,
doing everything they can
to stop the proposed Na-
turita golf course and gen-
erally emphasize the
things wrong with the Na-
turita community. Their
noise isn't nearly as enjoy-
able to many people as the
happy shouts of Bill Bean
on a golf course. However,
I'm sure the "noise mak-
ers" are performing an ex-
cellent service identifying
obstacles. Two obstacles
they have presented are
that the golf course would
be built on land without
financial value and would
actually put the commu-
nity at risk because of haz-
ardous radiation levels. It
was not many years ago
that land value In Moab,
Utah, Battlement Mes.a,
Colorado, Telluride,
Ridgway and any number
of.neighboring commun.t-
ties were comparatively
much less than the value
of Natunta's land today.
Somehow those communi-
ties had the vision to not
only build golf courses, but
also do a number of other
things that create strong
viable economies with
positive real estate value.
It's a guarantee, that if a
beautifully structured golf
course was designed and
builtthat,the value of that
and surrounding land
would rise.
The obstacle concern-
ing the hazardous radia-
tion energy levels is well on
its way to being remedied.
One of the biggest shots in
the arm to the Naturita
economy has been the mill
tailings removal program
that continues today. I un-
derstand in about two
years, the mill tailings
remediation will be com-
pleted and then what are
you going to have Natu-
rita? The mill tailing ob-
stacle will be gone. Radio-
logical hazards will be rem-
edied. I've heard rumors
some uranium mines are
reopening. Naturita's his-
tory has been boom and
bust with Uranium mining
and to stake your future on
uranium mining alone will
surely bring another bust.
So what's it going to
be Naturita? Are you going
to listen to the "noise mak-
ers" and do nothing? Or,
someday are you going to
listen to the happy shouts
of people enjoying their
community, playing golf on
a course that represents
the successful completion
of a project created by Na-
