Donald L. Hubbs St'.
1926 - 1999
Donald Lockwood Hubbs Sr.,
age 72, of Olathe, died Monday
afternoon, July 12, 1999, in the
Montrose Memorial Hospital.
World War H, Donald helped
build the air strips between
Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan.
When he was discharged
from military service, Donald
moved back to Olathe. He mar-

born on California Mesa, November 7, 1948, in Aztec,
southwest of Olathe, on
December 29, 1926, the son of
William "Steve" Earnest and Iva
Mac (McKelvey) Hubbs. He
spent his childhood on
California Mesa and received
his education at the Stone
School
After receiving his education,
Donald was drafted into the
service. He received his basic
training at Camp Roberts in
California. When he finished
his training, he was assigned to
the 808 Aviation Engineers.
During World War II, Donald
spent two years in the South
Pacific, helping to build air
strips for fighter planes to land
and take off and was also on the
Philippine Islands. At the end of
New Mexico. Their union was
blessed with two sons. Donald
and Edna were privileged to
share 50 years of marriage and
would have celebrated their 51 st
wedding anniversary this year in
November.
Donald worked for 23 years
at Union Carbide in Uravan,
then worked for the Montrose
County Road Department for 15
years, retiring in 1990.
Following his retirement,
Donald and Edna moved to
Olathe, where Donald made his
home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the
Oiathe Methodist Church, a life-
time member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and a member of
the Moose Lodge in Nucla.
Donald loved to work. He
enjoyed hunting, rodeos and
farming - especially enjoyed
raising cattle and horses on his
farm near Redvale. He thor-
oughly enjoyed working on
machinery.'
Survivors include his wife,
Edna F. Hubbs, of Oiathe; two
sons: Donald L (J~ackie) Hubbs
Jr., of Nucla, and James E.
(Cricket Roessner) Hubbs, of
Norwood.
Donald was the proud grand-
father of four grandchildren:
Rebecca (Geron) Harvey, of
Norwood; Theresa (Travis)
Cloud, of Hesperus; Shelly
(Dean) Scoggin, of Walderon,
Arizona; and Jennifer Hubbs, of
Naturita. He also had five great-
grandchildren.
Other family survivors
include three brothers: Preston
Hubbs, of Las Vegas, Nevada;
Dean Hubbs, of Phoenix,
Arizona; Bill Hubbs, of Palm
Springs, California; and one sis-
ter, Bess Kennedy, of Phoenix,
5:52 AM, July 22 - Sheriff's
Deputies assisted Norwood
Police Dept, in processing evi-
dence at a burglary.
7:26 AM - Norwood area
business broken into sometime
the night of July 21 or early
morning July 22. Suspect pried
the door open to enter.
Investigation ongoing.
9:23 AM, July 23 - Deputy
received a report of a theft in
Montrose County. The case was
referred to Montrose County
Sheriff's west end office.
6:58 - PM San Miguel
County Deputy reponded to the
Town of Norwood to assist the
Norwood Police Department
with traffic control for a vehicle
accident. Upon arrival, the
scene was clear and all parties
had left the scene.
8:40 PM San Miguel
deputy contacted a Norwood
woman regarding a dog com-
plaint. The woman stated that a
otweiller was trespassing on
ql kmr property,
5:01 PM- Deputies assisted
the Norwood Ambulance and
the Norwood Marshal's
Department with a person that
had burned himself with radia-
tor fluid. Norwood Ambulance
personnel treated and released
the patient.
8:39 PM - A deputy respond-
ed to the Norwood CountY
Fairgrounds for a courtesy serv-
ice to unlock a vehicle.
1:18 AM, July 25 - Sheriff's
Deputies assisted Norwood
Police Department with an inci-
dent in which a woman was run
over by a pickup truck. The
woman was injured and was
taken by Norwood Ambulance.
One man was arrested for DUI
and Vehicular Assault. An
investigation is ongoing by the
Norwood Police Department.
3:58 AM - Several juveniles
were contacted after a traffic
stop near Norwood. Two were
cited into Juvenile Diversion for
underage alcohol consumption
and one adult was issued a sum-
mons for underage alcohol con-
sumption.
4:34 AM - A San Miguel
County Deputy assisted
Colorado State Patrol in looking
for a vehicle in Redvale. The
vehicle was not found.
8:52 PM - A Deputy respond-
ed to a Wrighrs Mesa residence
to assist the Norwood
Ambulance for a person having
breathing problems. The ambu-
lance transported the person to
Montrose Memorial Hospital.
1:17 PM, July 26 - A private
pilot from Bayfield, Colorado,
made an emergency landing on
Hwy. 141 milepost #43 (Dry
Creek Basin) after his single-
engine plane lost power during a
trip from Wyoming to Durango.
The emergency landing was
made without incident and he
and his passenger were unin-
jured.

death by his parents and two
great-granddaughters.
Funeral services were held
on Thursday, July 15, at the
Olathe Methodist Church with
Rev. Clint Perry officiating.
Interment followed at the Olathe
Cemetery.
