The San Miguel Basin Forum, Thursday, January 22,1987.5 I Under the sponsorship of Montrose West Recrea- tion, local talent in the form of "committees" are driving for construction of a West End Golf Course this year. The latest optimism for Jl llkbuilding a golf course here comes from current nego- F tiations for land, a hurdle that has proved insur- mountable in the past. But not this time, ac- cording to Ron Belden and John Showalter of Nucla, two locals who have been Livestock report Jim Rowers Auctioneer and Manager 249-4126 or 249-6202 , Dean Bridges Auctioneer 249-3992 Friday, January 16, 1987 Our market was very active with nearly all clas- ses of cattle selling on a steady to strong trend. Also next Friday we will be of- fering a Colorado Brand for sale. "The resurgence of getting a land sample shows posi- nine hole course built tive for fairways and here. greens," said Belden. Ron Belden says that everyone is hoping to take up where the last effort stopped, the land being the key to continuing the effort. "We are negotiating for land on the west side of 141, 145 highway inter- section," said Mr. Beldam "There is about 160 acres, some of the property go- ing up the hill as well as running along Naturita Creek." He says that the property belongs to the Nell Reams family, the Bill Latta family and a small portion is under the man- agement of Bureau of Land Management. Mr. Latta has essential- ly offered the land to the Montrose West Recreation golf committee, believing that a nine hole course would improve the prop- erty. The Reams family, according to Mr. Belden, is considering a long term lease at hardly any cost to have the land improved. The ten acres of BLM pro- perty needed has not been secured, but contacts are being made. "Work has been on- going," says Mr. Belden. Many people have been doing what they can to help, he says. Gary Norton and Hart Gleason of San Miguel Power have been donating time. Dick Odom has been helping as a sur- veyor. "All the people at Montrose West Recreation are behind us," he said. A CSU university stud- ent has also been over, us- ing the project as a study, Chili Supper Scheduled The annual Chili Supper sponsored by West End Band Parents will be held on February 5th at Nucla Grade School. Serving will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The price for the Chili, along with cheese and veg- etable sticks and beverage, is $2.50 per adult, $1.75 for students K-5. There is no charge to preschoolers. Band students will be selling tickets before the Chili Supper, but tickets may be purchased at the door. All proceeds go into the Scholarship Fund. "There is enough sand drainage in the soil that construction of the greens would prove very inexpen- sive. That is a definate ad- vantage that this new site has." Once the land is legally secured, the estimate to build the course complete with greens and a sprink- ling system is near one- hundred thousand dollars, the automatic irrigation system being the most ex- pensive, being responsible for three-quarters of the above figure. "Since San Miguel Power has deregulated, we are hoping that something less expensive than twenty-five thousand dol- lars will get us power to the land," said John Show- alter. "We don't know yet, but people are working to get that cost down, an esti- mate made by the power company to get lines in there a couple of years ago. "We are yet forming de- sign committees and a fi- nancial committee," said Montrose Commissioner appointments Recently appointed by the County Commission Board were: Board of Adjustments . Also, the people and the local businesses are promising support." Should all support at- tempts fail, the people as- sociated with the golf course construction prom- ise to throw buffalo seed on the hand smoothed ground and swing for dirt greens. NOTICE OF ANNUAL ~ Wr.E'nNG Be!den. "The West End can have a very unique. nine hole course in a great location for, really, very little cost.
