As unbelievable as it
may seem, 1996 is now
just a memory... Or actu-
ally, a compilation of sev-
eral memories, lh;re are
just a few that made head-
lines ill our arca over the
pas! year.
January caIlle ill
with a snowstoi-in, and the
hope of lliorc llloisi tire
during a winter that had
started out dry. TWenty-
three Nucla athletes were
suspended for contract
violations after attending a
New Year's party. San
Miguel County Commis-
sioner, Leslie Sherlock, re-
ported that the Justice
Center plans were right on
schedule. Blueprints on
the upcoming Naturlta
Middle School additions
were finalized. Discus-
sions were taking place
about closing tim Nuela
dump and pulling in a
transfer sl~tion. Nuela
was negotit~]ng a toni raci
for law enfi~rcement ser-
vices willh Montrose
County, as former Nucla
Marshal, George McNeal
threatened to sue the town
for $35 million. More
snowstorms pounded the
region late in the month.
Dr. Robert Biehon was ar-
rested for unlawful distri-
bulion and l)OSsesion, and
fraud and (]('('('il to ol)lain

hired as Norwood's new

26, was the Basin's '96
New Year's baby. Federal
land grazing fees bottomed
out. P.A. Veronica
Valencourl said goodbye to
her patients and to the
area. Cindy Bowen an-
nounced that she would
run for another term as
Montrose County Conlmis-
stoner. In January, Anne
Elizabeth lluni, Thelma
I.ivingston, Aline tlopkins
and Bol) Wilson passed
away,
Charges were filed
against Dr. Bichon in Feb-
ruary. Ills license was
taken away, and 400 let-
(('rs in support of him were
received at the Apothecary
Shoppe in less than three
hours. Snowpack was re-
porled as slightly below
normal. The Norwood
comntunily discussed the
possibility ()la new school.
Art Goodtmms and Melvin
Slaals each anllounced
their candidacy. The Ba-
sin Clinic signed a lease lbr
services with Southwest
Memorial Hospital.
Jensen Construction was
awarded the contract for
the building of Norwood's
reservoir. Folkestad/
Mendel-Allison was
awarded the contract for
the Naturita Middle School
additions, Nucla High
School senior, Dustin
Owen, took first place at
tim State Wrestling Tour-
nament. Norwood School
staff and administration
squabbled over calendar
issues. Dr. Constance
Mahaney turned in her
resignation as Nucla El-
ementary principal. We
said hello to new babies,
Kaitlyn Cassidy McLeroy,
Cortney Lynn Fllnt-White
and Carissa Anne Via. We
said goodbye to Howard
Cluff, Michael Farrell, Will
Williams and Frederick
Stokes.
In March, San Miguel
Power prepared to tempo-
rarily ntove their head-
quarters so that
remediation could be done
on the soil beneath their
building. Town trustee
candidates were an-
nounced for upcoming
elections. A Naturita ju-
venile received probation
after shooting his
neighbor's dog with a bow
and arrow. Nath m and
Aaron Luster were ar-
rested for the '95 burglary
of the Family Market. Jim
Young announced his can-
didacy for the San Miguel
County Commissioner's
seat, and Leo Large an-
nounced his candidacy for
Montrose County. Deputy
Matt Gudermuth was
hired by Montrose County
to serve as the Nucla Mar-
shal. TWo juveniles were
arrested for a drunken,
late night stir in Nucla.
The 18 and l Lady Mus-
tangs lost to Sorocco at the
Regional Basketball Tour-
nanlent in overtime.
Debbie Reams was hired
as the new Redvale Post-
master. Norwood High
School was reprimanded
by CHSAA for practice vio-
lations. Montrose County
donated $25,000 to the
Basin Clinic. Naturita held
two debates for their town
council candidates. The
Norwood Library an-
nounced their intention to
seek a mill levy for up-
grades. Area teens got a
big screen T.V. at the Na-
turita Community Center.
Dr. Bichon pled guilty to
drug charges and then left

The Town of Naturita
was one of many to receive
a late Christmas present
from San Miguel Power
Association. The com-
pany, who had never paid
capital credit checks be-
fore 1975, is now return-
ing those funds to mem-
bers. Naturita's, which
was approximately $900,
came from the years of
1968 -71. According to
SMPA General Manager,
Gary Norton, there will be
$125,000 in capital cred-
its returned this year, with
over $ I million to give over
the next several years.
UMETCO will receive the
largest one, in the sum of
$54,000, ,. . , ,
